Wexford is strategically positioned at the centre of Ireland’s energy transition.
Energy Infrastructure
The county is adjacent to major offshore wind development areas in the Irish and Celtic Seas, identified under Ireland’s South Coast Designated Maritime Area Plan (SC-DMAP), Ireland’s first spatial plan for offshore renewable energy. The plan identifies four designated maritime areas for future offshore wind development.
County Wexford hosts the Irish landing point of the 500 MW Greenlink Interconnector, which links Ireland’s electricity network directly with Great Britain, enhancing energy security and supporting renewable energy integration
Rosslare Europort is being developed as Ireland’s principal Offshore Renewable Energy (ORE) Hub, supporting the construction, operation and maintenance of offshore wind farms in the Irish and Celtic Seas. The planned €220 million development will create a dedicated offshore energy logistics base and will significantly strengthen the region’s energy infrastructure.
ENERGY PROGRAMMES
Wexford also benefits from Ireland’s national electricity transmission system and the growing integration of renewable energy generation through EirGrid’s offshore energy programmes.
Wexford Town and environs is serviced by a natural gas pipeline supplied from a Combined Cycle Gas Turbine (CCGT) power station located at Great Island, Wexford. The pipeline is part of a combined investment of €500m in the South East economy through the development of the CCGT power station. The availability of natural gas provides a major boost to the local economy and has brought cost savings in excess of 45% to high-energy business users.
Digital Infrastructure & Broadband
Digital connectivity has become one of Wexford’s strongest competitive advantages.
County Wexford is benefiting from an estimated €88 million investment under the National Broadband Plan to provide high-speed fibre broadband to approximately 24,000 homes, farms and businesses. As of 2025, over 20,000 premises were eligible for connection, and more than 8,000 premises had connected to the network.
The rollout extends beyond urban centres into rural locations, supporting remote working, distributed operations, digital services, and advanced business applications.
A network of Broadband Connection Points (BCPs) located in community centres, enterprise hubs, libraries, and public facilities provides additional high-speed connectivity across the county.
Strategic Location and Connectivity
Rosslare Europort is Ireland’s closest port to mainland Europe and provides direct freight connections to France, Belgium and Spain, along with the UK, making it a key logistics gateway for exporters and international investors. Rosslare Europort is a RoRo, RoPax, offshore and bulk port with direct services to Europe each day.
County Wexford is connected to Dublin and the wider Irish economy through the M11 motorway corridor and national rail infrastructure, offering strong access to labour markets and international airports.
Waterford Airport
In 2026, Waterford Airport commenced a €30 million redevelopment project designed to enable the return of scheduled commercial passenger services, improve international access for businesses and visitors, support tourism and foreign direct investment, and strengthen the region’s economic competitiveness.
The project includes extending and widening the runway to accommodate larger commercial jet aircraft, alongside upgrades to terminal facilities, ground equipment and parking infrastructure. Construction began in May 2026, with commercial flights expected to resume from summer 2027, subject to the completion of works and airline agreements.
